Module 1

Reflection Prompt: How has your knowledge of technology standards changed after this module? Reflect on your own use of technology standards in your classroom and personal use.

I was not aware of any technology standards. The readings in the NETS for Teachers has made me aware of the need to be purposful in the use of technology and that it is beyond benificial to the learner not only in the in the classroom but for the future.

Description: My reflection this week will look at the use of a software we use in our DL classrooms. Bridgit, a SmartTechnologies software is a solution we use in Distance Learning Services at UA that allows us to have a computer conference, independent but simultaneous to the H.323 video conference (VTC). The use of this software aligns with NETS*S 2.b, 5.a, 6 a-d / NETS*T 1.a, 2a, 2c, 3 et al, / ISTE*C 2, 3, 5, 6

(Bridgit Conferencing Software)

Impact: Bridgit is an outstanding tool that allows electronic collaboration while the users are at a distance. This is an additional layer to the DL VTC. It works independent but simultaneous to the VTC and by this I mean that the far site students not only view the instructor on their TV screen, seeing and hearing the lecture, but the students can view what the instructor is doing on the PC in the room as well. For example, an instructor has a PowerPoint to show. In a VTC without Bridgit, the instructor would have to pick if they wanted the students at the far site to see the feed of the instructor camera or the feed of the PowerPoint (a scan converted fuzzy image of the PowerPoint). Bridgit enables them to send both images to the far site students to enhance their learning, viewing the instructor on the TV and the PowerPoint on their pc monitor. Not only are they able to follow along with written instruction, the students can grasp a greater knowledge of the topic by seeing the instructor's body language, facial expressions, and interaction with others.

Intent: Initially, I will be checking with our users, the instructors, to be sure they know the different collaboration features that Bridgit offers and show them how that will benefit their class instruction by collaborating and interacting with their far site students similarly to how teachers 'in person' would have students come up to the board and add their findings to a graph if you will. I will also be sure they have the handouts that I have attached to this module reflection. these are the same handouts I give my student tech assistants. (ISTE*C 2a,e,g, 3c) My long term goal is to research the vendor site and follow up on any additional training that would be beneficial to be a better coach and user. ( ISTE*C 6 et al).
